These files are MS Word documents that are intended to be used as teaching handouts for parents whose babies are being discharged home on medications. The information was prepared by Mario Gonzalez, Pharm.D., R.Ph.and William LeeLum, BS., R.Ph., from Miami FL. There is a separate document for each medication that explains in simple lay terms:
1) The purpose of the medication
2) How to administer it
3) What to do about missed or vomited doses
4) Storage and handling instructions
5) Side Effects
6) Problems that should prompt a call to the physician.
Note to the Practitioners (from the authors):
These pamphlets are intended to be used to teach the parents of NICU patients about the medications that they will be giving to their babies after discharge. They can be downloaded as a .zip file which, when decompressed, contains a separate MS Word document file for each medication. You may feel free to edit the files as needed to personalize them for your NICU, or to edit the medical content. The authors have made every effort to check the medical content of the teachings for accuracy. If there are any questions as regards such accuracy, we recommend that the practitioner check the published literature. Neither the authors nor the Florida Society of Neonatologists offer any warranty as to the safety or accuracy of the information contained in these pamphlets. They are offered only as a suggestion of a format that could be used to convey information about medications to parents of NICU graduates. If you decide to adopt these pamphlets for use in your NICU, then you should be sure that you agree with the medical information and parental advice provided.
