Long Term Evaluation After HFOV: The Provo Clinical Trial Cohort. Gerstmann D, Wood K, Miller A, et al. Provo, Utah.

This study provides long term (5-8 years) clinical follow up from the Provo Multicenter HFOV clinical trial which demonstrated significant benefits for the use of HFOV vs CV for premature infants with RDS (Pediatrics 1996;98:1044-57). Follow up data showed that children who were in the HFOV group had significantly better gross motor outcomes than the CV group. There were no significant differences between groups in fine motor abilities or in mental-verbal IQ. Pulmonary function testing revealed that the CV group had larger residual lung volumes than the HFOV group.

Comment. It was amazing that they were able to get >95% follow up information including developmental data and PFTs on the 81 patients from their original study.
